Context

Rwanda achieved impressive real GDP growth of about 9% per annum between 2000 and 2014. As a result of this growth, Rwanda is experiencing high urbanization rates concentrated in its capital, Kigali, and given its limited total land area, it is now one of the densest countries in Africa.

GGGI team is supporting the government of Rwanda in its transition towards an inclusive green economy by:

mainstreaming green growth principles and green technologies through the implementation of the Green Growth and Climate Resilient Strategy pilot projects;

strengthening technical capacities of national and local governments in terms of urban planning and green infrastructure development;

supporting Rwanda Green Fund (FONERWA) as it transitions into a sustainable and blended financing vehicle for green growth in Rwanda;

supporting the government of Rwanda to accelerate progress on SDG targets as well as NDC implementation.

In partnership with the Government of Rwanda (GoR), GGGI supported the implementation of the Economic Development and Poverty Reduction Strategy II 2013-2018 (EDPRS II)/now known as the NST1  in green urbanization and secondary city development, as well as providing technical support to the Rwanda Green Fund (FONERWA).

GGGI Rwanda has supported GoR with the integration of green growth principles & recommendations from the National Roadmap for Green Secondary City Development into the District Development Strategies (DDS) and their revised master plans. The DDS serves as the next generation of Rwanda’s medium-term strategy under the National Strategies for Transformation 2018-2024 (NST1) which replaces the EDPRS II and is geared towards delivering Rwanda’s new Vision 2050.

GGGI  Rwanda Key Milestones include:

  • National Roadmap for Green Secondary City (SC) Development (2016)
  • District Development Strategies (2018)
  • Green Building Minimum Compliance System (2019)
  • Revised Master Plans for Kigali and 6 SCs (2020)
  • Neighborhood Development & Run-off reduction guidelines (2021)
  • E-mobility Showcase (2021)
  • Establishment of Rwanda Greenpreneurs Network (2022)
