Project context, objectives and description
Developing local capacity in preparation for the transition to green economy is a critical component of the UAE’s green growth initiative. In the UAE, GGGI has been supporting the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) on capacity development activities in line with the country’s Youth Empowerment Strategy. Activities include organizing regional and local training programs, including public sector training on green procurement (2015), annual green growth knowledge sharing workshops for MENA region (2015-2017), and youth policy dialogue and internships (2015-present).
The project objectives were to i.) nurture the entrepreneurial skills of the youth by providing a platform for them to showcase their green business start-up ideas to potential investors; and ii.) strengthen the technical capacity of professionals on green growth, climate change, and sustainable development through trainings, workshops, internships, and the like.
The project aligns with IO3. Improved multi-directional knowledge sharing and learning to empower local and external agents necessary to drive green growth processes in partner governments.

GGGI supported the completion of boot camp sessions, capacity building workshop, and mentorship activities.
- The “Beyond the Pitch” program is a great localization of GGGI’s Global Greenpreneurship initiative. After competitive screening and rigorous training, 3 teams emerged as the winners. One of the teams (“Cycled”) has been granted a trial run for their recycling bins at Abu Dhabi’s National Exhibition Center and they will now incorporate their business. Another team (“BactoWatt”) also became a finalist in GGGI’s Global Greenpreneurship Program.
